Awesome Arsenal hammer Lyon 6-0 in the Emirates Cup

Try telling Arsenal fans that pre-season results don't matter. The Gunners were in breathtaking form today as they thrashed a near full strength Lyon team 6-0 to kick off their pursuit of the Emirates Cup, the second pre-season tournament Arsenal are participating in after winning the Barclays Asia Trophy last weekend.

Arsenal picked a fairly strong side, though they did opt to leave the likes of Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla and summer signing Petr Cech on the bench, while giving a first ever run out at the Emirates to young Alex Iwobi, who impressed in Singapore last weekend, and as all Arsenal fans know by now is the nephew of Nigerian legend Jay-Jay Okocha.

Emiliano Martinez was the surprise starter in goal and was called into action in the 12th minute to produce the first save of the game. The young keeper, who could well see some playing time this season with Wojciech Szczesny heading to Roma on loan and David Ospina still recovering from his exertions in the Copa America, produced some excellent saves to suggest that Arsenal have another good young talent on their hands.

But all the talk from that point onwards was the quality of Arsenal going forward with the Gunners opening their account near the half hour mark as Mesut Ozil found Olivier Giroud in the box, and though the Frenchman didn't get the desired connection with his head, he did enough to put the ball in the back of the net.

That opened the floodgates for Arsenal, who ran riot over the next 8 minutes, adding three more goals to their tally and putting this contest to bed. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who did everything but score in Singapore, had his shooting boots on today to make it 2-0 to Arsenal at the end of a classy move.

Alex Iwobi made it three for the home side showing his ability in front of goal, and then had another in the back of the net only for his second to be ruled out for offside.

Arsenal did get a fourth quickly enough though with Aaron Ramsey the latest beneficiary of some Ozil magic, who has looked a class apart thus far in pre-season.

Arsenal were at it again in the second half with Ozil getting on the scoresheet himself for the second game running, with the German starting to show he can add some more goals to his game, and shortly after he was replaced by Santi Cazorla, the Spaniard made it 6-0 to the Arsenal by squeezing the ball under a jumping wall to give the home fans a perfect start to the season.

Arsenal could well have had a couple more before the end of the game with substitute Chuba Akpom hitting the woodwork, while fellow sub Theo Walcott somehow managed to give Lyon keeper Anthony Lopes a chance to produce a rare save, instead of picking the ball up from the back of his net.

Arsenal will square off against Nicklas Bendtner and Kevin de Bruyne's Wolfsburg side tomorrow as they look to pick up their second piece of silverware of the new season.
