Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has expressed his confidence in the club’s latest signing Christian Benteke, whilst hoping that he becomes a big hit at the Merseyside club in the times to come.

The Northern Irishman was quoted telling reporters: "There's a number of qualities that he has and he will only improve in his time at the club."

Rodgers went on to point out that the number of goals that the Belgian star has scored in the Premier League show that he has been among the most prolific forwards in the competition in recent seasons, which in turn makes him a very important signing for the side.

The Northern Irishman also snubbed comments by the Reds great Jamie Carragher, who said that Benteke would not be suited ot Liverpool’s style of play. The boss said that the player will only complement it and help the team perform better. He said that while the 24 year old is a ‘big guy’, he possesses all the necessary attributes which are needed by the Reds, which include his pace, movement and goalscoring prowess.

Rodgers also said that the Benteke is a threat in the air too, and that he can be an asset during counter attacks too. He added that the player can also be effective when the team is playing deep as he can ‘hold the ball up with his physical strength’.

While Benteke may certainly be expected to make it big at Anfield, the fact remains that he is similar to the Reds flop Mario Balotelli in a number of aspects. And thus, it remains to be seen how viable a signing the Belgian proves to be for the Merseyside giants this summer.
