Indian Premier League (IPL) franchisees Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals have received a massive shock, with the teams having been suspended from the next two editions of competition.

Justice Rajendra Mal Lodha, who was heading the panel, which was formed to look into betting allegations pertaining to the two sides, delivered the aforementioned verdict on behalf of the investigating committee.

Under the verdict, Gurunath Meiyappan, former Team Principal of CSK, and Raj Kundra, co-owner of RR, have been pronounced guilty of taking part in betting during IPL matches.

It was revealed that Meiyappan had suffered losses amounting to nearly Rs 60 lakh during betting on IPL matches in its 2013 season. On the other hand, Kundra was suspended for life from getting involved in any form of cricket being conducted by the BCCI.

Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals are among the most supported teams in the IPL, and their ban will certainly come as a massive disappointment to fans.

It will be interesting to see if there is any appeal mechanism built into the process and what will happen to the players of the two franchises going forward.
