Heather Watson came, she saw and she fell agonizingly short. The 23 year old from the small island of Guernsey produced the best tennis of her young professional career and was two points away from beating arguably the greatest female tennis player of all time, however, world no.1 Serena Williams produced her best tennis when her back was against the wall, digging deep to pull off an incredible 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in the match of the tournament at Wimbledon so far this year.

At one stage Serena appeared to be cruising into the fourth round, up 6-2, 4-3 against the young Brit, but Watson produced a dramatic comeback, rattling off 6 games in a row to win the second set and pull ahead 3-0 in the third with a double break in hand.

That proved inconsequential though as Serena won four games on the trot herself and it looked for a while that she might just power home like she so often does against most opponents.

However, Watson wasn't done just yet, and stemmed the rot by holding serve for 4-4 and then breaking the Serena serve for a 5-4 lead. Serena came out of the blocks with a desire to win and quickly raced to 15-40 on the Watson serve, only for the youngster to battle back to deuce. It was not to be though as Serena broke the Watson serve and then won the next two games rather comfortable to book a round of 16 meeting with her big sister Venus.

35 year old Venus, also a 5-time Champion at Wimbledon like Serena, had no such difficulties in her third round encounter with Serbia's Aleksandra Krunic, winning 6-3, 6-2.

Also advancing to the last 16 was another former champion in Maria Sharapova. The Russian diva quelled the challenge of Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu 6-4, 6-3.
