World no.2 Roger Federer began his quest for a second French Open title today with a comfortable straight sets win against Colombia's Alejandro Falla.

The Swiss legend, a winner of 17 Grand Slam titles, including a solitary crown here at Roland Garros, started a little sluggishly, but improved as the match progressed to ease past Falla 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.

Up next for Federer is 29 year old Spaniard Marcel Granollers, ranked 56th in the world. Granollers beat Matthias Bachinger of Germany 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7) earlier today.

Also advancing to the second round is Federer's compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka, who cruised past 27 year old Turkish star Marsel Ilhan, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3.

Asian superstar Kei Nishikori of Japan also powered his way into round 2, beating Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu, 6-3, 7-5, 6-1. The ever improving Nishikori is considered an outside challenger for the title, but the youngster might need to contend with Federer in the quarter-finals in the bottom half of the draw.

Other winners on day 1 included Cypriot Marcus Baghdatis, who stunned big serving Croat Ivo Karlovic, local lad Nicolas Mahut, Latvian star Ernests Gulbis and Germany's 22nd seed Philipp Kohlschreiber.
