The Mumbai Indians remained in contention for a place in the Eliminator Game of the Indian Premier League, picking up a comfortable 23 run win over a beleaguered Kings XI Punjab side who succumbed to their 7th defeat of the season, thus realistically ending any hopes they had of making the knock-out rounds.

Batting first on winning the toss, the Mumbai Indians posted a competitive total of 172-3 on the board with openers Lendl Simmons (71) and Parthiv Patel (59) making half-centuries and sharing in an opening stand worth 111. Patel, who was the more aggressive of the opening duo on this occasion, fell in the 13th over and the batsmen that followed failed to make the most of the platform that the openers had laid for their side.

172 though proved to be more than enough to take down Punjab, who had another poor start, losing Virender Sehwag for just 2 to Lasith Malinga. Glenn Maxwell, who had been restored to the side for this game came in at no.3 and struck a couple of boundaries en route to making 12 before falling to the left-arm spin of Suchith.

Murali Vijay (39) and David Miller (43) temporarily threatened to mount a challenge for the Punjab side, but it was nipped in the bud. A series of run outs late in the innings cost the side dearly with George Bailey, Wriddhiman Saha and Axar Patel all found short of their crease, and in the end Punjab found themselves well shy of the target and in all likelihood with nothing left to play for in the games that follow.
