The Chennai Super Kings returned to winning ways and closed the gap on Indian Premier League leaders Rajasthan Royals by picking up a comfortable 27 run victory over the Royal Challengers Bangalore in Bengaluru.

Having been put in to bat, Chennai made the most of some ideal batting conditions on offer to post a very decent total of 181-8 on the board. Truth be told considering the platform that was laid by the likes of Dwayne Smith (39) and Suresh Raina (62 from 32 balls), they should have comfortably gone past 200, but the likes of young leggie Chahal, brought them back into the contest by taking three wickets, including the big ones of Raina and skipper MS Dhoni (13).

South African international Faf du Plessis provided a late push, making a crucial 33 from just 18 balls to ensure that CSK didn't completely waste the platform that their top order had built.

The Royal Challengers made a competitive beginning, with Maninder Bisla (17) and Rilee Rossouw (14) both getting off to starts, but both fell in the space of a few deliveries in an Ashish Nehra over.

Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli came out at no.3 and made a competitive half-century, scoring 51 from 42 balls, but didn't really set the stadium on fire. His colleagues also made contributions, but much like the openers, got into double digits and fell shortly after.

The big scalp of AB de Villiers was picked up courtesy of a run out with Dhoni doing some smart work behind the stumps despite a wayward throw from Smith.

In the 14th over, the game already seemed as good as over with RCB reeling at 97-5, and the best they could manage was to end with 154 with Ashish Nehra coming back well for the Super Kings and finishing with immaculate figures of 4-10 from his 4 overs.

RCB now find themselves propping up the IPL points table, and will no doubt have the cricket odds against them in their next game against the IPL leaders Rajasthan Royals in Ahmedabad on Friday. The Super Kings meanwhile return home to the Chepauk Stadium where they host the Kings XI Punjab in the late game on Saturday.
