India beat arch rivals Pakistan in a thrilling penalty shootout after a hard earned draw over 60 minutes in the Final of the Men's Hockey event at the Asian Games. Kothajit Singh's goal in the second quarter cancelled out Rizwan Muhammad's third minute strike.

India played some excellent hockey in the second and third periods in particular with their movement and passing of a different class. The team appeared to have a clear strategy on how to take on the Pakistan side and used it to full effect. India though started to show signs of fatigue in the fourth quarter and Pakistan threw the kitchen sink at India late in the game with the winners being forced to hold on for dear life.

The match eventually made its way into a penalty shootout where India displayed nerves of steel. Gurwinder Chandi stepped up and made it 1-0 for India, calmly slotting the ball past Butt in the Pakistan goal.

India's goalkeeper Sreejesh was outstanding in the shootout and denied Haseem Abdul Khan first up. Rupinderpal scored India's second, but Pakistan got on the scoreboard as well with Waqas slotting the ball home at the third attempt after Sreejesh had made two outstanding saves.

Massive controversy followed as Manpreet's goal was then disallowed after he had been seemingly fouled by Butt in the build up to it, but the Referee's bizarrely ruled that not only was that not a foul, but that Manpreet had kicked the ball. India protested vehemently to the decision, but the referee was having none of it.

Sreejesh though was in imperious form and made an excellent stick intervention to deny Umar Bhutta to keep India's advantage intact.

India scored from their last two penalty shots to seal an excellent 4-2 win much to the delight of their small contingent of fans at the event.

The gold medal win also guarantees India a place at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
