The Champions League's reigning champions Mumbai Indians have been sent crashing out of the competition at the qualifying stage, losing their second match of the qualifiers today to the Northern Districts of New Zealand.

Having been put into bat, Mumbai Indians crashed to a very poor 46-5 in the 11th over as Scott Styris ran through their top order. Skipper Kieran Pollard (31) and Harbhajan Singh (10) stemmed the tide briefly before a couple of unexpected 20s from Lasith Malinga (20 from 8 balls) and Shreyas Gopal (24 from 12) helped Mumbai reach a marginally competitive 132-9 from their 20 overs.

Northern Districts made light of the target set by Mumbai as they added 83 for the first wicket to quell any hope of a Mumbai comeback. The runs came in pretty good time to ensure that there was never any danger of losing this game. Kane Williamson with 53 from 36 balls led the way for Northern Districts.

Northern District lost 4 wickets for 32 runs in a spell towards the middle of the innings, but it was far too little too late for Mumbai to salvage something from this game as Northern Districts and the Lahore Lions advanced to the second stage of the competition.

Mini Scorecard:

Mumbai Indians 132/9 (20 overs, 6.6rpo)

K Pollard 31 (24) S Styris 3-21 (4)

Northern Districts 133/4 (17.2 overs, 7.67rpo)

K Williamson 53 (36) J Bumrah 2-26 (4)
