The flip of the coin went Angelo Mathews’ way on the first morning of the opening test of this short series at Lord’s. Sri Lanka chose to bowl first, giving their seam attack first dig on an impressive green surface. The Lord’s pitch had a nice even tinge of green on it and was expected to assist the fast bowlers, prompting the two sides to pack their seam attacks nicely. Sri Lanka gave themselves plenty of options with Shaminda Eranga getting the nod alongside fellow seamers Nuwan Kulasekara and Nuwan Pradeep. Dimuth Karunaratne also made his way into the Sri Lanka XI as an opener.

The English XI for this test features three debutants. Sam Robson earned his first test cap and will assist skipper Alastair Cook in opening the innings. Moeen Ali, the second debutant, comes into the side as a spinning all-rounder while Chris Jordan got his debut test cap to strengthen the English pace attack. Liam Plunkett made his return to the English test side as well. Not surprisingly, both sides went into this test with good, strong seam attacks.
