A blistering innings of 95 from just 43 balls by 'The Big Show' Glenn Maxwell helped the Kings XI Punjab record an unlikely 6 wicket win over the former champions Chennai Super Kings in a high scoring contest at Abu Dhabi. More than 400 runs were scored in the game as Kings XI chased down 205 to win, but such was the ease with which Punjab chased down the target, that they got there in the end with more than an over to spare.

The Chennai Super Kings won the toss and got off to a blistering start as Brendon McCullum (67 from 45 balls) and Dwayne Smith (66 from 43 balls) smashed the ball to all corners of the ground, sharing in an opening stand worth 123 in which they were comfortably scoring at 10 an over. McCullum fell first to rookie left arm spinner Akshar Patel, making his IPL debut, but the runs kept coming for Chennai as Suresh Raina (24) and MS Dhoni (26 from 11 balls) continued to strike the ball cleanly, taking Chennai to what looked like a winning total of 205-4.

Every one of the Punjab bowlers got stick, but Rishi Dhawan did manage to sneak in 3 overs for 21 runs in between.

Virender Sehwag (19 from 10) and Cheteshwar Pujara (13) entertained briefly in Punjab's response, and while they did not go on to make a big score, ensured that Kings XI were right up there in terms of the asking rate at the very least. Akshar Patel came and went for just 2, and at 52-3 the game was inching towards the Chennai Super Kings.

Glenn Maxwell (95) and David Miller (54* from 37 balls) thought differently though and continued to play attacking cricket. While Miller took a bit of time to find his feet, Maxwell brought the reverse sweep out first ball and smacked Ravichandran Ashwin to the offside fence.

Kings XI brought up their 100 in the 11th over and the game was well and truly on. Maxwell got to his half century in 25 balls and in the game exploded in the next 3 overs as Kings XI raced past 150 on the first ball of the 15th over and victory was suddenly in their grasp. Maxwell had his share of luck too, dropped twice in the same Ravindra Jadeja over, and rode it all the way to 95 before he was yorked by Dwayne Smith.

Chennai were handicapped by the loss of the bowling services of Dwayne Bravo, who fell awkwardly in the field, but there was no denying the batting brilliance of Punjab, who cruised to victory with Miller also hitting top form, smashing 3 sixes and an equal number of 4s on his way to his fifty.

Skipper George Bailey came out and enjoyed in the run feast, scoring a quickfire 17 to ensure the game never even went down to the last over as Chennai were soundly beaten on a pitch that certainly has a lot of runs in it!
