Australian Rugby today announced the passing of Wallaby number 556 and former Australian Halfback, John Cornes, aged 66.

John Cornes passed away in Charleville Hospital in central Queensland yesterday afternoon, after a long battle with cancer. Cornes played for Queensland from 1969-1972 and received one Test Cap for the Wallabies and three non-Test Caps.

He was part of the first Wallabies side to play a Test on Fijian soil, when Australia won 21 to 19.

Former Wallaby Captain and Classic Wallabies Program Manager, Geoff Shaw, was saddened by the passing of John.

“On behalf of the Australian Rugby Community and the Classic Wallabies, we offer our condolences to the Cornes family at this difficult time. The Classics will feel the loss of another member of the Wallaby family.”
