Recently disbanded England star batsman Kevin Pietersen was snapped by the Delhi Daredevils for 9 Crores in the Pepsi IPL auction 2014  after the the GMR owned franichise used a right to match card.  Punjab were the team to profit the most from the early stages of the auction though as they secured slashed price deals for Swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag worth just 3.2 Crores and Aussie all-rounder Mitchell Johnson worth 6.5 Crores.

The other big story from the marquee player segments was the sale of India's big hitting batting all-rounder Yuvraj Singh for Rs 14 Crore to Royal Challengers Bangalore, who have decided to go batting heavy once again in this auction. Former Mumbai wicket keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik was another big purchase at the auction for Rs.12.5 Crores by the Delhi Daredevils.

Former Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene was surprisingly unsold in the first section but could be sold later in the auction. Meanwhile, Indian opener Murali Vijay was sold for 9 crores to the Delhi Daredevils while David Warner was sold for 5.5 crores to the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

IPLs big guns Chennai and Mumbai meanwhile, chose to play relatively silently in the marquee section of 16 players with Mumbai only purchasing Mr. consistent Michael Hussey for Rs.5 crores and Chennai using their Right to Match card to buy back South African batsman Faf Du Plessis for Rs 4.75 crores.

At the end of the 16 player marquee segment, things went pretty much as expected with the high pursed Delhi Daredevils going big to revamp their squad whilst the rest of the franchisees chose to play slow.

Each team will need to have a minimum of 16 players to constitute a squad while the maximum squad size is 27. It will be interesting to see how the teams decide to buy in the non marquee section though where there promises to be fierce competition for uncapped Indian talent introduced for the first time in the auction.
