Bernard Tomic (AUS) kept alive his hopes of winning back-to-back titles on Day 6 at Apia International Sydney 2014, fighting his way past qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky (URK) 6-7(4) 7-5 6-3 in Friday’s second semifinal.

Earlier, top seed Juan Martin del Potro (ARG) overcame fourth seed Dmitry Tursunov (RUS) 6-4 6-2 setting up a blockbuster final match-up against Tomic. Tomic will be bidding to become the first Australian to successfully defend his crown in Sydney since Lleyton Hewitt (SA) in 2005. The young Aussie got a rude shock this morning when he was drawn to face top seed Rafael Nadal in the opening round of the 2014 Australian Open. However, his form this week will certainly give him a lot of confidence heading into that blockbuster encounter.

In the women’s draw, qualifier Tsvetana Pironkova (BUL) has capped off a stunning week at Apia International Sydney 2014, completing an unlikely tournament victory with a 6-4 6-4 win over fifth seed Angelique Kerber (GER) on Friday night. The world No.107 is the first qualifier to win the Apia International Sydney title. Speaking after her win, the petite Bulgarian said, “Now that I finally have it, it's all surreal.  I still cannot believe it, honestly.”

Meanwhile, the newly formed team of Timea Babos (HUN) and Lucie Safarova (CZE) knocked off No.1 doubles duo Sara Errani (ITA) and Roberta Vinci (ITA) 7-5 3-6 10-7 to claim the Apia International Sydney doubles title.
