Netball: Australia overcomes slow start to beat Wales

The Australian Netball Team celebrated Tegan Caldwell’s international Test debut with a 63-36 victory over Wales in the opening game of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games on Thursday.

The 25-year-old goal attack became the third Australian to make her debut at a Commonwealth Games, following Susan Fuhrmann and Susan Pratley in 2006, as coach Lisa Alexander gave all 12 of her players court time in the first win.

The Australians had to overcome a slow start against a plucky Welsh side as the world’s top ranked team was held to a 10-9 advantage at quarter-time at the Scottish Convention & Exhibition Centre (SECC).

India got their medal count up and running on the opening day of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland winning the Gold and Silver medals in the Women's 48kg Weightlifting competition.

20 year old Sanjita Khumukcham won the Gold with a combined score of 173, narrowly edging out her teenage compatriot, 19 year old Mirabai Chanu Saikhom, who won Silver with a score of 170. Nkechi Opara of Nigeria won the Bronze, considerably further back from the Indian duo.

The event itself was exceptionally exciting with Sanjita going top of the charts by lifting 77kg in the Snatch event on her third attempt. Mirabhai failed to clear 75kg on her second attempt and had to settle for that weight when the athletes made the turn, lifting that weight in her final attempt.
