South Africa continued their promising build-up to next year’s ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh when they won their opening match of their series against Pakistan by nine wickets with 33 balls to spare at Dubai on Wednesday. Having won their recent series on the sub-continent against the No. 1 ranked Sri Lanka and now having comprehensively outplayed Pakistan as the No. 2 ranked side, they can feel confident that they are on the right track.

Pakistan were never in the game after winning the toss and finding themselves 4/3 after two overs. At the end of the six-over power play they were 18/3 and there was no way back as wickets fell regularly to see them finish on 98/9. Lonwabo Tsotsobe took South Africa’s second most economically figures of all time, finishing with 2/9 from his four overs, while Dale Steyn finished with 3/15 from his four overs.

The Proteas lost Hashim Amla early in their reply before Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis finished the match with their unbroken stand of 83 for the second wicket off 73 balls. De Kock finished with a career best 48 off 38 balls with three fours and two sixes.

De Kock only turns 21 next month but he has clearly come of age as an international cricketer. Apart from his contribution with the bat he made two stumpings took two catches and was involved in a run out as well.

The second match takes place in Dubai on Friday.
