The Chennai Super Kings squeezed out a narrow 12 run win against their fellow IPL team, the Sunrisers Hyderabad, to go top of Group B in the Champions League T20 at the midway stage of the tournament. It was raining sixes at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi as local boy MS Dhoni entertained his home town fans by smashing an unbeaten 63 from just 19 balls to power Chennai to an imposing total of 202-4 in their 20 overs.

The foundation for Chennai's innings had been laid by Suresh Raina, who produced another good innings, ending with 84 from 57 balls before he was brilliantly caught at long on by a leaping Thisara Perera off Dale Steyn. Despite all the carnage, the South Africa duo of Steyn and JP Duminy returned figures of 4-50 between them from 8 overs, while an under bowled Amit Mishra conceded just 13 runs from his 2 overs with rookie skipper Shikhar Dhawan once again missing a trick. Dhoni's explosion came late in the innings as he carted Thisara Perera for 5 sixes in an over which went for 34, which in the end might have determined the outcome of the game.

The Sunrisers made a more than decent fist of their chase, with Parthiv Patel (37) and Dhawan (48) putting on another solid stand at the top of the order, adding 87 for the opening wicket in just about 9 overs to keep their side very much in the hunt. However, 3 wickets for 4 runs within the space of 11 deliveries might have cost the Sunrisers the game with Raina proving instrumental in running out Patel and then removing JP Duminy for naught.

Thisara Perera came and went for just 12, leaving the Sunrisers in a tough position at 106-4 in the 14th over before Darren Sammy decided to take charge, smashing 5 sixes of his own to race to 50 from just 25 balls. A lack of support from the other end though meant that it was all on Sammy, and when the Windies skipper fell in the 19th over, with him went Sunrisers' chances in the contest.

Up next for the Super Kings are the Brisbane Heat on Saturday, while the Sunrisers are also in action earlier the same day when they take on the Titans. Both of those games will be played at Ranchi itself, and the fans will hope that the weather continues to hold true.
