Chelsea plan shock contingency if Rooney is a bust, and Arsenal won't like it

Chelsea have failed to sign any of their forward targets so far this transfer window and are still looking to replenish their depleting attack with a brand new signing. Just yesterday, Mourinho mentioned that he would be putting all his eggs in the Rooney basket and go all out to sign the striker. On the contrary though, Spanish newspaper AS believe that the Blues have a Plan B if the Rooney plan doesn’t happen, in the form of Napoli and Arsenal target Gonzalo Higuain.

Higuain has been linked with a move to the Gunners for a long time and it seemed at one time that the transfer was almost done. However, much to the ire of Arsenal fans everywhere, Arsene Wenger once again failed to put pen on paper. Napoli were then believed to be in for the Argentine forward with club chairman Aurelio de Laurentiis claiming that he would plan the use of the money from the Cavani sale wisely in this transfer window.

He said, “"It's true that we're negotiating for Gonzalo Higuain and Leandro Damiao. The money we got for Cavani was £56m and added to the £52m we had set aside for the transfer budget there will be £108m to carefully invest on Napoli. There are various names on the table, we're assessing the situation.”

Now the Blues are looking to hijack the forward if they decide that the Rooney attempts are in vain or if they feel that the 27 year old might be too risky an investment considering his eccentricity. However, Real Madrid have gone back on their statement and mentioned that their 26 year old striker will only be parted with if they receive a fee of a staggering £34 million. Though whether this will deter Roman Abramovich or not remains to be seen. Also whether the fact that Mourinho and Higuain worked together for the past three years in which the Argentine made more than 120 appearances will prove as a positive or negative influence is anyone’s guess really.
