La Liga winners Barcelona, having made their attack arguably the best in the world by signing Neymar, are now looking to bolster their defence. There have been reports of their interest in the versatile Chelsea defender David Luiz and also Paris St. Germain’s star Thiago Silva, however, with neither move coming even close to materializing, Barca have reportedly turned their attention to another Chelsea star, Serbian Branislav Ivanovic according to the Daily Star.
Barcelona have been trying to address their depleting centre back problems. Carles Puyol has had consistent injuries which hasn’t been too much of help given the fact that he is 35. Eric Abidal has been released as a free agent after recently undergoing a liver transplant leaving Barca further short of numbers at the back. Javier Mascherano isn’t exactly a natural centre back, while Marc Bartra and Marc Muniesa are still not up to the Barcelona standard yet. This leaves Gerard Pique as the only half decent centre back in the side. The Catalans will be looking to iron out this chink in their armour as they are look far and wide for at least one, possibly two new signings this summer.
Branislav Ivanovic has been an integral part of the Chelsea squad since he was signed from Lokomotiv by Luiz Felipe Scolari in 2008. Being a versatile defender, he has been used by by a host of Chelsea managers as a centre back and a full back. Ivanovic has fit into both slots equally well.
David Luiz is also of prime interest to the Blaugrana who like to introduce his sheer tenacity, his passing accuracy and technical acumen into their armoury. His free kick taking ability is an added bonus.
However, Chelsea and Jose Mourinho will be highly unlikely to let go of two integral parts of their defence that easily. The two defenders will fetch a really high price if they are to leave the club. Having already spent plenty of money on Brazilian superstar Neymar, it remains to be seen how much more of their bank account Barca can afford to empty to keep their (seemingly) unending era of dominance alive.
