Eugenie Bouchard won the first Grand Slam main draw match of her career on Monday at Roland Garros, defeating world no. 59 Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 6-1, 7-6 (2) to advance to the second round.

Bouchard played solid tennis last week en route to reaching the semifinals in Strasbourg and carried that momentum into Paris, knocking out Pironkova, a former Wimbledon semifinalist in 78 minutes.

Trailing 2-5 in the second set, the Bulgarian attempted a comeback by erasing two match points to force a tiebreak, but Bouchard quickly regrouped to pull out a victory in straight sets.

The 19-year-old Canadian hit 37 winners in the match compared to 13 from her opponent. Bouchard, who became Canada’s new no. 1 WTA singles player today thanks to career-high ranking of no. 77, will face defending champion and world no. 2 Maria Sharapova of Russia. The two players met for the first time earlier this year in Miami and it was Sharapova who came away with a 6-2, 6-0 win.

Sharapova won her match against Su-wei Hseih of Taiwan 6-2, 6-1 in just 54 minutes earlier today.

The Russian diva spoke about her upcoming match with Bouchard in her post match press conference, sharing, "She seems like a very nice girl and obviously has a great game and one to watch. We played against each other in Miami.  It was a good performance by me, but I think, you know, when you're at that point in your career, every month is a learning experience for someone her age and at that level.  And, you know, I'm sure that she will be looking forward to the next one."

Sharapova added, "I think you have to respect anyone that's across the net from you. There is a reason why they're there, whether they have had a good week or a bad week or they're not having a good month or they're having a great month. It just doesn't matter, because you're going to be facing them and your job is to try to beat them."
