Just when you thought Chelsea cannot possibly play any more matches than it already has, another one pops up (potentially). The Blues might have to play another London derby against Arsenal to decide who will have to play the two-legged qualifier for the Champions League and who gets direct entry in the next season.

Owing to Arsenal’s massive 4-1 win at the Emirates against recently crowned F.A. Cup winners Wigan, they have introduced a unique possibility of two teams having to need to take part in a playoff to decide positions. If Chelsea play out a goalless 0-0 draw against Everton and Arsenal win 2-1 at the Sports Direct Arena (or any similar result - Arsenal winning 3-2, and Chelsea drawing 1-1 for example), both Chelsea and Arsenal will finish on the exact same number of points (73), identical goal difference(+35) and goals scored (73 or more).

The Premier League has a clause for such a situation which states that “If at the end of the season... the question of qualification for other competitions cannot be determined because two or more clubs are equal on points, goal difference and goals scored, the clubs concerned shall play off one or more deciding league matches on neutral grounds, the format, timing and venue of which shall be determined by the board.”

It was widely speculated that the head to head score (which Chelsea leads 4-2) would be considered. Instead, there will be playoff which might be a single match or a two legged match depending on the board’s discretion. This play off, if it were to happen, would be the first of its kind in Premier League history.
