The Sunrisers Hyderabad gave their hopes of making the IPL 2013 play-offs a major boost, whilst at the same time ending any chance the Kings XI Punjab might have haboured of making it to the knock-out rounds with a 30 run thrashing of their hosts on a wet day in Mohali.

In a match that was a must-win situation for both the teams, Kings XI Punjab captain Adam Gilchrist won the toss and elected to field first on what promised to be a damp pitch after rain falling right through the day. For the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Cameron White marked his return as the captain replacing Kumar Sangakkara and Biplab Samantray made his way back to the team as Aashish Reddy had broken his finger. For KXIP, the 19-year old, Sandeep Sharma made his debut replacing Manpreet Gony, also Luke Pomersbach and Harmeet Singh were brought back for David Hussey and Bipul Sharma.

The Sunrisers were in deep trouble at 52-5 in the middle of the 9th over with debutant Sandeep Sharma having taken an incredible three wickets, while Harmeet Singh had picked up the big fish Shikhar Dhawan for 15.

However, Parthiv Patel, who had witnessed the carnage from the other end finally came good, scoring an excellent 61 from 47 balls, and in the company of Karan Sharma (22) and Thisara Perera (32) guided the visitors to a very competitive 150-7.

The Kings XI Punjab had a horror start to their innings with Mandeep Singh falling for naught in the first over to Dale Steyn. Adam Gilchrist (26) and Shaun Marsh (18) added 45 for the second wicket before both men fell on consecutive deliveries to Darren Sammy.

Sammy then added the massive wicket of David Miller to his kitty in his next over, and with it all but ended Punjab's chances in this match.

Luke Pomersbach (33) and R Sathish (25) came close to making a game of it, but after the latter was run out in the 17th over, Punjab's chances evaporated with him.

Kings XI ended with just 120-9 from their 20 overs, losing by 30 runs, and thus ending their hopes in the tournament.

The Kings XI will next take on the Royal Challengers Bangalore away from home on Tuesday, while the Sunrisers Hyderabad take on the Mumbai Indians in another must win game for them on Monday.
