The Chennai Super Kings rode on Suresh Raina's magnificent century to strengthen their hold on the no.1 spot in the IPL standings by edging out a battling Kings XI Punjab side by 15 runs. The Chepauk Stadium witnessed a variety of dance moves from Dwayne Bravo as the Caribbean King took 3 wickets in the last over of the match to overshadow a 93 run stand from 52 deliveries between Shaun Marsh and David Miller, that had threatened to cause one of the most remarkable upsets in IPL history.

MS Dhoni, leading the same side from the last game, won the toss and promptly elected to bat first. Punjab made a couple of changes bringing in Luke Pomersbach in place of Azhar Mahmood and all rounder Rajagopalachari Sathish for Manan Vohra.

Parvinder Awana drew first blood for Punjab by removing Wriddhiman Sahah (18) in the fourth over, who was beginning to cut loose. Raina joined Mike Hussey and the duo found the boundary with decent regularity to prevent the Punjab bowlers from taking advantage.

Hussey  was deceived by a quick Piyush Chawla delivery to be stumped for 35 while Dhoni (2) was made to pay the price for being too greedy when the CSK skipper tried to steal a second but was run out by a brilliant throw from R Sathish to leave Chennai at 92 for 3. But from there on, it was a wretched story for Punjab as Suresh Raina along with the support of Albie Morkel launched an all out attack on the helpless Punjab seamers to put on 74 from just 38 balls for the fourth wicket.

Morkel (23) departed in the penultimate over but Raina continued his massacre till the very last over to bring up his first IPL century as the hosts plundered 70 from the last five overs to post 186 for 4.

Kings XI Punjab were on the back foot right from the start with both the openers Pomersbach (7) and Mandeep Singh (15) succumbing to Mohit Sharma to leave them at 36 for 2 at the end of the powerplay. David Hussey (22) tried to accelerate but got carried away and ended up mistiming a slog to long off.

However, Shaun Marsh and David Miller displayed an exquisite display of merciless hitting to take Punjab near the finish line. They needed to score 19 from the last over but Bravo had other plans as he cleaned the stumps of Marsh (73) with the first ball and took two more scalps, conceding just three runs to take Chennai home. David Miller remained unbeaten on 51 from just 26 balls.

Chennai are now comfortably positioned at the top of the pile with 18 points and would now proceed to the Wankhede to face a stiff challenge from Mumbai on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Kings XI Punjab will need to quickly improve on their bowling before they are confronted by the batting powerhouse of the Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday.
