A six on the penultimate ball of the match allowed the Kings XI Punjab to keep their hopes of a play-off berth firmly alive, while dishing out a heart breaking defeat to the Pune Warriors at the PCA Stadium in Mohali on Sunday night.

Punjab appeared to have lost the game when their decision to send the Pune Warriors in backfired miserably with the visitors posting an imposing 185-4 on the board in their 20 overs. Aaron Finch, captaining the Pune Warriors today, took advantage of being dropped early on by Adam Gilchrist to post an excellent 64 and shared in an opening stand worth 86 with Robin Uthappa, who contributed 37.

A pair of 34s from Yuvraj Singh off 24 balls and Luke Wright off just 10 deliveries helped Pune post a score that would 9 out of 10 times result in a win.

Punjab's hopes looked dashed further as they slid to 5-2 losing the experienced duo of Adam Gilchrist (4) and Azhar Mahmood (0) cheaply. Manan Vohra made a handy 22 from 13 balls to help young Mandeep Singh stabilize the innings before David Miller came out and revived hopes of an unlikely win.

Miller joined Mandeep out in the middle with the scoreboard reading 58-3 in the middle of the 7 over, and took the pressure off the youngster, who had done pretty well thus far. Mandeep dropped anchor while Miller went after the bowling, and duo shared an unbeaten 128 run stand for the fourth wicket of which Miller contributed 80 from 41 balls courtesy 5 huge sixes.

Pune appeared to have the game in the bag heading into the home stretch with Punjab needing an unlikely 29 from 12 balls. A pair of full tosses from Ashok Dinda were sent to the boundary by Miller, but Punjab failed to build on that in the rest of the over, leaving them needing 16 to win from the last one.

Luke Wright took on the responsibility to see his side to safety and a pair of singles off two perfect opening deliveries left Punjab needing 14 to win from 4. However, 6,2,6 off the next three deliveries from Miller saw the Kings XI record an unlikely win as the Pune bowlers struggled to land the ball in the late stages of the contest.

The Kings XI Punjab next head over to Delhi to take on a rejuvenated Daredevils side which registered their first win of the tournament earlier in the day. Pune are also in action on Tuesday, heading to Bangalore to take on the Royal Challengers in the earlier start.
