Arsene Wenger’s defensive reshuffle at Arsenal will take place in earnest in the summer and the Gunners boss wants Swansea’s Ashley Williams to lead his new-look backline, reports the Metro. The Swans captain has been hugely impressive at the back for the Welsh outfit, leading them to their first ever trophy in March when they lifted the Capital One Cup at Wembley.

Swansea boss Michael Laudrup doesn’t want to lose his influential skipper but Williams has made it known to the club that he would be willing to leave the Liberty Stadium should a big club come knocking on his door with an offer.

Wenger is unhappy with both his experienced centre-backs Per Mertesacker and Thomas Vermaelen, even talking about their failed partnership earlier this week. Williams’ ability to play the ball out of defence will be a vital quality for Arsenal while his physicality will be a welcome addition to the fragile defence.

The Gunners aren’t the only Premier League giant interested in the defender though as Liverpool are also in the mix. Brendan Rodgers played a massive role in Williams’ development as a player and might use that to his advantage like he did with Joe Allen’s purchase from Swansea last summer. Man City are also in the market for a centre-back, with Roberto Mancini even conceding that his failure to buy a back-up for Vincent Kompany is the reason for City’s failure to mount a sustained title challenge.
