Chelsea’s biggest ray of hope this season, Demba Ba, could be available for the Blues’ Saturday evening fixture against Wigan after the Senegal international returned to training with a face mask. The Blues winter signing was doubtful for the game this weekend after suffering a broken nose in the clash against his former club Newcastle.

Ba was caught square in the face by the boot of Magpies defender Fabricio Coloccini and the player had to be substituted due to the injury. After continued pain and swelling for over 48 hours after the incident, the club’s medical staff flew the striker out to Milan to have a face mask fitted.

The Daily Mail revealed that the 27 year-old looked ready for action when he returned to training on Thursday. Benitez will be glad at having Ba back in the squad although the manager is unlikely to risk his first choice striker against relegation strugglers Wigan and Ba is most likely to feature on the bench, with Fernando Torres likely to get a starting spot on Saturday.

Benitez will hope that the striker returns to full fitness before Chelsea visit Sparta Prague for the first leg of their Europa League clash. The manager will look forward to producing an impact in the second tier of European football, as well as save their third place in the Premier League from rampaging Spurs, as he aims to convince owner Roman Abramovich to hand him the Chelsea job on a permanent basis at the end of the season.
