Olivier Giroud may have drawn severe flak for his slow start at Arsenal but the striker has now hit back at critics, pointing towards statistics and informing that he has delivered a lot more for Arsenal than talismanic striker Robin van Persie did in his debut season.

26 year-old Giroud moved from French champions Montpellier to Arsenal last summer and had a slow start, scoring his first goal for the Gunners in his seventh appearance. The striker has been relegated the bench on numerous occasions this season in favour of giving Theo Walcott opportunities down the middle but Giroud has finally found form and the Frenchman has netted 14 goals and almost as many assists in 34 games. On the other hand, 20 year-old Van Persie had scored just 10 times in 41 games and Giroud has used this fact to try and pacify disgruntled Arsenal fans.

The Independent quoted Giroud as saying, “Since the beginning of the season, I registered 14 goals and given 11 assists. For the first season. It’s better than the beginning Van Persie had, even though when he arrived at Arsenal, he was younger.”

One must note that Van Persie started out on the wing for Arsenal and the Gunners already had Thierry Henry dominating on the goalscoring front. Addiyionally, Van Persie will be remembered by Arsenal fans not for his injury-marred early days at Arsenal, but for his last 18 months at the Emirates, when he emerged as the league's top scorer in the 2011/12 season.

Arsenal fans are not necessarily impressed with Giroud’s claims but they would undoubtedly hope that the France international can improve his game and emerge as a powerful goalscoring threat much like Van Persie over the years to come. The Frenchman is in a good run of form and fans will want him to continue delivering at the highest level as Arsenal attempt to reach the top four once again this season.
