Arsene Wenger is planning to reinforce his midfield with an £8 million move for Anderlecht midfielder Lucas Biglia. Arsenal have been on the lookout for midfield stars since Alex Song left the club for Barcelona in the summer and the Argentine is the latest to catch the Gunners boss’ eye.
The 26 year-old started his career in homeland Argentina before joining Belgian side Anderlecht in 2008. The midfielder has captained the club to two consecutive Belgian league titles and even been called up to the Argentina national team on numerous occasions.
Arsenal and Real Madrid had shown an interest in signing the midfield star last summer but Anderlecht refused to sell as Biglia still had three years left on his contract. The Independent revealed that Arsenal are keen on finding a holding midfielder this winter and Rennes midfielder Yann M’Vila and Wigan’s James McCarthy are also understood to be on Wenger’s radar.
Following Sunday’s 2-2 draw in the FA Cup against Swansea, the Gunners will be forced to play 5 games within 13 days and Wenger is looking to add ‘one or two new players’ to his squad to get the best results. Mikel Arteta and Jack Wilshere have been performing well in central midfield this season but Wenger is keen on adding depth to his squad to ensure a top four finish in the league and maybe even launch a bid for this season’s Champions League. However, given that the player still has two and a half years on his current contract, Anderlecht will certainly not sell on the cheap this January.
