The Bangladesh cricket team pulled off a nail biting 2 wicket victory in the final ODI of the 5 match series against the West Indies and clinched a rare series win by a 3-2 margin in Dhaka on Saturday. After winning the toss and electing to field to first, Bangladesh restricted West Indies to a par score of 217 all out before chasing the total down dramatically despite being 30-3 at one stage.
Trinidad and Tobago all rounder Kieron Pollard starred for the Windies as he made a stupendous 85 from 74 balls to pull his side out of a hole when at 17-3. Pollard put up a 132 run stand for the fourth wicket with Darren Bravo (51) to set his side a platform to launch in the death overs. The Windies though collapsed from a respectable 149/4 to 217 all out in just 48 overs courtesy some poor batting from their lower middle order. Right arm swing bowler Shafiul Islam, playing this game in place of Mashrafe Mortaza starred for the hosts with enviable figures of 3/31 in 9 overs while Mahmudullah 2/38 and Sohag Gazi 1/31 supported him well in what was a disciplined bowling effort.
The Bangladeshi chase didn’t start off well either as they lost their top order in Tamim Iqbal (8), Anamul Haque (0) and Jahurul Islam (10) cheaply and were reduced to 30-3 after 9 overs. Senior players Mushfiqur Rahim (44) and Mahmudullah (48) then steadied the ship for the hosts with a stable 4th wicket stand of 91 before Nasir Hossain (39*) held his nerve in the end to seal the win for them, batting sensibly with the tail. Useful contributions from Momiul Haque (25) and Sohag Gazi (19) in the Bangladesh lower order, helped Hossain cross the finish line for the hosts.
Fast bowler Kemar Roach (5-56) and mystery spinner Sunil Narine (3-38) starred for the visitors in their valiant attempt of defending 217 but the hosts held their nerve well under pressure and sealed a precious series win for the Bangla boys.
The player of the match was Mahmudullah Riyadh for his all round show in the match while the player of the series was given to the Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim for his fine leadership and crucial innings with the bat.
The win will please the cricket crazy Bangladeshi fans as the hosts fought back from a disappointing whitewash in the 2 match test series to share the spoils with a spirited odi series victory.
