As the group stages of this year’s UEFA Champions League reach their climax, Group E presents an interesting conundrum. Group E features Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk, Italian Serie A champions Juventus, defending European champions Chelsea and the newly included Nordsjaelland. Matchday 6 sees Juventus head over to the Donbass Arena to take on Shakhtar, while Chelsea are at home against Nordsjaelland.
While Nordsjaelland are already out of the competition, here is what the rest of the teams need to do to qualify for the knockout rounds.
Shakhtar : They are already through to the knockout rounds with 10 points from five games but they need to ensure at least a draw to top the group.
Juventus: The Italian giants will need to ensure that they get atleast 1 point from their final group game against Ukrainian champions Shakhtar away from home. A win on matchday 6 will see them top the group with Shakhtar qualifying in second place.
Chelsea: The defending champions Chelsea will need to win their final group game against minnows Nordsjaelland at Stamford Bridge and hope that Juventus lose to Shakhtar to go through to the round of 16. Should those results fail to emerge, Chelsea will go through to the Round of 32 of the Europa League.
Chelsea should beat new boys Nordsjaelland to notch up 3 points but one gets the feeling that Juventus will be good enough to get a result and ensure their passage through to the knockout stages.
Besides, there is a battle for the top spot in Group E where winner takes all in the game between Shakhtar and Juventus. The Italian giants may just have enough in the tank to keep Shakhtar at bay, though the Ukrainian Champions have absolutely nothing to lose and will aim to keep their fans happy by picking up a result against the Old Lady of Turin.
