Ivory Coast winger Gervinho believes his side Arsenal can emulate fellow Londoners Chelsea and win the Champions League this season. The former Lille player doesn’t seem to think of any side as a firm favorite in Europe this year and is not overawed by Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Gervinho was quoted in an interview with the People saying, “I don't think Barcelona and Real Madrid have been at their best this season. Chelsea are not through yet and Manchester United have had to work hard to win their games too. There is no big favourite"
"You have to expect the unexpected this season once again. You cannot underestimate anyone going into the last 16. One of the objectives of the club is to win the Champions League. We will do anything we can to do it.
Arsenal have already qualified from group B along with German side Schalke, into the round of 16 of the competition and it will need a Herculean effort from the struggling London side to win the competition given their abysmal run of form this season.
That being said, Arsenal have been uncharacterisitically unpredictable this season, but on their day can produce the kind of quality that can stun any side in the competition.
The Gunners are yet to achieve Champions League success, the one massive feather missing in Manager Arsene Wenger's cap. A Champions League winners medal is what separates the good from the greats, and it is definitely something that the club will continue to chase wholeheartedly while he remains at the helm of affairs.
