Twenty year old Dutch international defender Stefan De Vrij is on the Chelsea radar according to reports in the Metro. The highly rated centre half has fast evolved into a mature and responsible player at Dutch eredivise club Feyenoord and is regarded as one of the brightest young prospects across the globe. European champions Chelsea are considering a move for the player in January with a view to bolster their defence which tends to get stretched due to the presence of only four center-backs at the club, with one of those Branislav Ivanovic also often used at right-back.
Chelsea’s interest in the defender was spurred on by the ambiguity in his contract negotiations with his current club Feyenoord. He is a key component of the Feyenoord line up and has also recently been elevated to club captain this season following the sale of former skipper Ron Vlaar to Aston Villa.
It is believed that De Vrij is reluctant to pen down a new contract with Feyenoord over lack of clarity in the club’s ambition and direction. With talks seeming to have hit a roadblock, Chelsea are willing to chance their arm by submitting an official bid worth £5 million this January.
Feyenoord too don’t seem to be pleased with the recent developments as it is believed that their technical director Martin van Geel is willing to consider selling the young talent if issues are not sorted soon.
