Sporting Lisbon winger Jeffren was understood to be enjoying interest from the Premier League for quite some time and his agent has now confirmed that Liverpool have been in pursuit of the footballer.
The 24 year-old is a youth product of Barcelona's famed La Masia academy but failed to make enough of an impact at the Catalan giants, where breaking into the first team does require a player to be more than a little special. Barca shipped out the winger to Sporting Lisbon in 2011 and he is yet to impress at the Portuguese club either, having spent a large part of last season ruled out with injury.
Liverpool though are in dire need of forwards this season after Fabio Borini picked up a long term injury earlier this season, leaving Luis Suarez as the lone experienced striker in the squad. The Reds have been linked to a number of players for the last few weeks, and speculation on winter signings looks set to continue in the run up to the January transfer window.
The Mirror quoted Jeffren's agent Jorge Llagostera as saying, “Yes. Liverpool and other Premier League clubs are monitoring the kid. But, formally, we have still not received an offer to negotiate with Sporting.â€
Brendan Rodgers is planning to make a loan offer for the Spaniard in January with a view to making the move permanent next summer if Barcelona choose to forgo their £9 million buy-back clause. Although a host of other clubs are also said to be interested in him, Jeffren is likely to move to Anfield where he is should enjoy regular first team action under Rodgers.
