The Daily Mail predict that the unthinkable could occur at Arsenal as Arsene Wenger is rumoured to be eyeing Napoli star Edinson Cavani. The veteran manager has spoken of the need to fill the void left by Robin van Persie with a top quality centre-forward but the thought of Wenger splashing in excess of £30m for a player has raised quite a few eyebrows. The added intrigue is provided by the fact that Chelsea were behind the Uruguayan all summer long, finally conceding defeat after he signed a new five-year deal with the Italians which takes his contract up to 2017.

But Wenger reportedly sent chief scout Steve Rowley on a mission to watch the striker from close quarters and he certainly wasn’t disappointed as Cavani scored an incredible four goals in Napoli’s 4-2 victory over Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk in the Europa League.

The hefty transfer fee aside Arsenal cannot compete with Chelsea and Manchester City with regards to wages, an issue which will play a huge part if he is to leave Naples. The 25 year olds record of 79 goals in over 100 appearances is frightening and he has all the qualities to be immensely successful in the Premier League.

The South American might be an imposing centre-forward standing over 6 feet but he has two great feet to go with his aerial ability. He tore Chelsea and Man City apart in last season’s Champions League with his brilliant movement and finishing and the Gunners would be purchasing a proven talent if they do get their hands on him.

Olivier Giroud has gradually settled into his role at Arsenal but the side still lack a goal scorer capable of grabbing 20 or more goals. Wenger made an exception in the summer by buying established talent in Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla but nabbing Cavani would be a whole other proposition although they do have enough money in the coffers to fund the transfer.
