The bright lights of the Premier League can get to the heads of young players and a prime example is the current contract stand-off between Liverpool and Raheem Sterling. The Daily Mail claims that the 17 year old is planning to reject a contract offer from Liverpool if it doesn’t meet his demands of £50k-a-week, an amazing wage packet for a teenager who has only made 12 appearances in the league. Sterling has burst onto the scene this season, cementing a place in the Brendan Rodgers’ starting eleven with a slew of eye-catching performances.

His contract expires in the summer of 2014 and Liverpool are waiting till he turns 18 in December to offer him a new deal in recognition of his progress. The winger currently earns a measly £2k-a-week and it is believed that Liverpool are willing to go up to £20k-a-week. But Sterling’s agents are adamant that their client is worth more than that, using the wage packets of non-starters Stewart Downing and Joe Cole as a reference point.

In a fresh twist to the story, the Daily Mail also reports that Sterling took to Twitter to rubbish the claims regarding his contract demands. “I’ve just woken up to this rubbish. I can assure you I’ve not asked for that stupid amount, where [sic] waiting till I’m 18 to sign,” is what the teenager had to say before promptly removing the tweet. Now it remains to be seen if Brendan Rodgers does take any action against the player for his public outburst.
