Arsene Wenger is appalled at the antics of left-back Andre Santos, who was seen chatting with former Arsenal star Robin van Persie before kick-off at Old Trafford last weekend and the Brazilian also went as far as taking the United hitman’s jersey at half-time.
There are widespread calls for the defender to get the drop from Arsenal’s first team following his actions on Saturday. The left-back's performance was also below par on the afternoon against United, making his spot in the squad against Schalke all the more doubtful.
The Mirror claimed that the Gunners' boss demanded an explanation for the defender’s acceptance of Van Persie’s United jersey especially after the Dutchman scored the opener against them on Saturday. Arsenal fans have been vocal about their displeasure with their former captain and Santos’ actions have naturally hurt their sentiments.
The Brazilian was ineffective in defence and his attacking runs were also useless owing to his poor crossing. Should Santos be dropped from the squad for Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Schalke, Thomas Vermaelen could take up the left defensive role, bringing Laurent Koscielny into central defence. Kieran Gibbs has also returned to training and Wenger would consider using the Englishman earlier than expected to reprimand Santos for his imprudent behaviour on Saturday.
