The Czech Republic have won the Fed Cup for the second straight season, beating Serbia 3-1 in the final in Prague. The hosts came into day 2 leading 2-0, with Lucie Safarova and Petra Kvitova having both won their respective matches on the opening day. Former French Open Champion Ana Ivanovic gave the visitors hope of a comeback by beating Kvitova in the first of the reverse singles, but Safarova made sure of the result by comprehensively thrashing former world no.1 Jelena Jankovic 6-1, 6-1 to seal an excellent win.
Petra Kvitova, who had pulled out of the season ending WTA Tour Championships after just the one match due to a stomach bug, seemed a step slow today, having used up what little energy she had in reserve in her win against Jelena Jankovic on Saturday.
In sharp contrast Ana Ivanovic played arguably some of her best tennis of the year. Ana, who produced a slew of unforced errors in her contest with Safarova on Saturday, was a player possessed today, hitting some incredible winners to keep her team alive in the contest. It took an hour and 47 minutes, but Ivanovic had finally broken the resolve of Kvitova as she picked up an excellent 6-3, 7-5 win.
The onus was now on Jelena Jankovic to send this match into a deciding doubles rubber, but the former world no.1 rather uncharacteristically continued to struggle for form this weekend. Safarova dropped just a game in either set, and coasted to an easy win to help Czech Republic clinch a seventh Fed Cup title.
