Incredible Serena downs Maria again to win WTA Championships

User Rating: / 0

serena_williams_winsPre-tournament favourite Serena Williams beat Russian diva Maria Sharapova in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 to end a perfect week in exemplary fashion to win the WTA Championships for a third time. The legendary American, a winner of 15 Grand Slam titles, had not dropped a set all week, and was once again in supreme form hammering 40 winners to cruise to a comfortable win.

The 31-year old American continued to show that age was no barrier to success on the WTA Tour as she ended the year with an incredible 7 titles including two Grand Slam triumphs at Wimbledon and the US Open, and an Olympic Gold Medal.

The match itself wasn't a terribly exciting affair with Serena winning all of her service games without breaking much of a sweat, while a break in the first set and two in the second were good enough to wrap up the contest.

Sharapova was disappointed with her effort in the match, but could find no answer to Serena's power and accuracy, and has now lost 9 straight matches to the powerful American. The Russian diva will need to find an answer to Serena if she is to stake a genuine claim to being world no.1 next year.

For the time being though both women will need to settle for a spot behind young Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, who ended the year at the top of the women's world rankings.

Final Score:

(3) Serena Williams (USA) d. (2) Maria Sharapova (RUS) 6-4, 6-3
