Arsene Wenger has handed Jack Wilshere a huge boost to his confidence by naming in the squad travelling to Norwich later today as the midfielder edges closer to a full return from injury. Wilshere has been gradually edging towards match fitness, taking part in a few behind-the-doors friendlies recently and now a trip to struggling Norwich gives the 20 year old a perfect opportunity to ease himself back into action. The player’s agent broke the news on Twitter, which came as a surprise to many as Wenger had earmarked next weekend’s game against QPR for his return.
Despite being named in the squad, Wenger gave this update during his usual pre-match press conference: “Jack is 80% match fit now and maybe needs one more game before he is back. There is no apprehension for him in challenges. Maybe he will play for the Under-21s on Monday night and then we can look at it.â€
Wenger has been quick to ease the pressure on Wilshere, especially with regards to his England career as he told Arsenal’s official website: “Let's wait until Jack comes back. He has not played in the first team for 14 months. Do you know what that is like, 14 months out of competition? He works very hard. He is doing well but let's not go too far.â€
The return of Wilshere couldn’t be better timed as Abou Diaby and Tomas Rosicky are still on the treatment table, with the manager left with the trio of Mikel Arteta, Aaron Ramsey and Francis Coquelin for the midfield spots.
