South African powerhouse the Titans opened their Champions League T20 campaign with a very impressive 39 run demolition of the Perth Scorchers at SuperSport Park, Centurion on Saturday afternoon. Being put into bat on losing the toss, the Titan openers got their side off to a rollicking start, adding 109 runs for the opening wicket. Jacques Rudolph remained unbeaten on 83 from just 59 balls, while Henry Davids made a more than handy 54 from 38 deliveries to set the Titans on their way.

The home side failed to make the most of their start, faltering towards the ends of their innings to finish with a par score of 163-4 in their 20 overs, having looked good for 180-190 for the better part of their innings. The Perth bowlers with the exception of Nathan Rimmington (2-20) and Brad Hogg (0-26) had largely ordinary outings.

Perth though struggled with the bat in their response, and never really got going. Australian internatioanl Shaun Marsh fell for 7 to CJ de Villiers, and on the very next ball the seamer bowled Perth skipper Marcus North for naught. Behind the eight ball right from the off, the Scorchers never really recovered, and lost wickets at regular intervals.

Though they made their way to 34-2 at the end of the powerplay, veterans Herschelle Gibbs (19) and Simon Katich (23) fell in quick succession. Mitchell Marsh batted around the tail and made a handy unbeaten 52 from 41 balls, but didn't find any support from the other end as the Scorchers struggled to 124-7 in their 20 overs.

De Villiers picked up the man of the match award for his exceptional bowling effort, ending with figures of 3-16, though it could have easily also gone the way of Jacques Rudolph.

The Titans will have a few days to enjoy their win before heading over to Durban next where they take on the Auckland Aces, while the Scorchers are also in action at the same venue in the late kick-off against the Kolkata Knight Riders. The weather in Durban though does threaten to put a bit of a dampener on both games.

Mini Scorecard:

Titans 163-4 (20 overs, 8.15rpo)
J Rudolph 83* (59) N Rimmington 2-20

Perth Scorchers 124-7 (20 overs, 6.12rpo)
M Marsh 52* (41) CJ de Villiers 3-16
