Tottenham Hotspur's transfer saga involving Jan Vertonghen seems to have been vindicated as the Belgian defender has started the last three fixtures of Barclays Premier campaign. And despite Arsene Wenger continued denial that Arsenal played an active role in all the drama, the defender himself has come out and spoken about a potential move to Emirates, telling reporters from the Metro that the Gunners were late in making their approach.

Vertonghen said, “Arsenal did try to sign me, but I'd already made my decision that I wanted to play for Tottenham. I chose Spurs because they gave me a good feeling. I spoke to Daniel Levy and Rafael van der Vaart."

The defender announced that he had had a chat with Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp about life with Arsene Wenger but the Non-Flying Dutchman was unable to convince him. Vertonghen added, “I spoke to Dennis. He's a very good guy, and I get along with him very well. He understands that Tottenham are also a very big club.”

The 25 year old spent over half a decade at Ajax Amsterdam, where Bergkamp is currently Assistant Coach. Vertonghen won many team and individual accolades at the Dutch club and the defender was spoilt for choice as a host of clubs displayed a keen interest in him. Tottenham seem to have made a fine acquisition in the former Dutch Player of the Year.
