All eyes will certainly be on goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois as he mans the posts for his on loan club Atletico Madrid against his parent club Chelsea in the European Super Cup on Friday evening. However, the young Belgian has announced that he will show no mercy towards the Blues and will attempt to win the Super Cup with Atletico.
The stopper was snapped up by Chelsea last summer after a hugely impressive season as Courtois won the Belgian League with boyhood club Racing Genk. The 20 year-old was immediately loaned out to Atletico Madrid, who were looking for a keeper following the departure of David de Gea to Manchester United. The youngster impressed yet again as Atletico captured the Europa League and claimed 5th position in La Liga last season.
"Chelsea is my team, but Atletico is my team now," claimed the stopper in an interview with leading English daily the Guardian. "Chelsea is my team, but, because I have never really trained with them or played a game, I cannot feel like it is really my team. When I go in maybe one or two or three years to Chelsea, yeah, I will want to win the Champions League with them and the Super Copa with them, but now I am at Atletico Madrid."
Chelsea could be undone by a keeper of their own this week as they set out to claim their first piece of silverware this season. The Blues would certainly be pleased with his progress and Courtois will definitely want to make an impression in the ultimate audition as he sets his stall to point out that he has what it takes to make the grade at Stamford Bridge in the years to come.
