Just a few hours after the story broke that Liverpool had beaten Arsenal to the capture of 23-year old Turkish midfielder Nuri Sahin on a season long loan from Real Madrid, new Liverpool boss confirmed that a deal for the player was extremely close to completion, and believed Sahin would be a Red before the weekend.
Speaking after Liverpool's narrow 1-0 victory over Hearts in the Europa League, Rodgers declared, "Hopefully in the next 24 hours we'll get some confirmation on that... He's a very good footballer."
While Rodgers has taken to the media like a duck to water, he has been brutally honest in all his dealings so far, and Liverpool fans can be rather assured that Sahin has no doubt opted for their club ahead of rivals Arsenal. It will be interesting to see though how Rodgers looks to use Sahin in what is an already over crowded midfield at the club.
Steven Gerrard and Lucas Leiva are no doubt first choice in central midfield for the club, and with the likes of new signing Joe Allen, Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson waiting in the wings, not to mention youngsters Jay Spearing and Jonjo Shelvey, one can't really understand why Rodgers needs an 8th central midfield player unless he is looking to offload some of the aforementioned names before the summer transfer window closes.
Meanwhile, the news will come as a massive blow to Arsenal fans who were hoping that the capture of Sahin would go some way in making up for the departure of fan favourite Alex Song to Barcelona. Arsene Wenger has his work cut out for him as he looks to raise the morale both inside and around the club.
