MotoGP was back in action Friday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with the practice sessions topped by the Repsol Honda riders. Casey Stoner lead the way in the morning session, while teammate Dani Pedrosa was ahead of the field in FP2.
Overnight rain meant conditions on the track, which comprises parts of the famed oval stitched together with an infield section, were not ideal in the first session. The track was damp in places leading to times a second or two off the ultimate pace in the dry. Lap-times in the second session were quicker owing to improved conditions and track evolution.
Dani Pedrosa set a scorching time of 1:39.783 in FP2, the fastest of the day, following up on a second place in the morning. Australian Stoner was top of the pile in FP1 with 1:41.925, but suffered rear suspension issues later in the day and could only manage a 5th fastest time, over eight tenths of a second off Pedrosa.
Ben Spies was back in form with the second quickest time of the day, and was the faster of the two factory Yamahas. Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo endured a difficult day, unhappy with the setup of his bike. He was third on the FP2 timesheet, four tenths off his teammate.
Andrea Dovizioso bettered his lowly tenth place in the morning, moving up to fourth, ahead of Stoner and Briton Cal Crutchlow who recovered well from a crash in FP1 to finish sixth.
Alvaro Bautista and Stefan Bradl finished seventh and eight, ahead of the Ducatis of Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi. Hayden was notably third fastest in FP1 for his home race.
The first period was punctuated by a red flag as Hector Barbera of Pramac Racing suffered a massive highside at the final corner, landing on his head and fracturing three vertibrae. Barbera was returning from a recent leg injury having broken his left tibia and fibula, and will be replaced by Toni Elias for the rest of the weekend.
Pol Espargaro topped both sessions in Moto2 ahead of Marc Marquez, while Moto3 witnessed Sandro Cortese set the fastest time of the day.
