The summer’s biggest transfer story has finally reached a conclusion after Manchester United and Arsenal reached an agreement over Robin van Persie. Both clubs announced the news on their respective websites and the reported £23 million move will be completed within the next 24 hours, with the player travelling to Manchester tomorrow to complete a medical. Arsene Wenger has been reluctant to sell his biggest star to his oldest rival, but with United meeting their asking fee, the Gunners had no choice but to cash in.
A statement on Arsenal’s official website read: “Arsenal Football Club can confirm that terms have been agreed for the transfer of Robin van Persie to Manchester United. Van Persie will travel to Manchester on Thursday in order to agree personal terms and complete a medical ahead of the proposed move.â€
Man United made a similar announcement on their website: “Manchester United is pleased to announce it has reached agreement with Arsenal Football Club for the transfer of Robin Van Persie.â€
Man City and Juventus were also keen on Van Persie ever since he announced that he wouldn’t be signing a new contract. Arsenal had to cash in on last season’s Player of the Season this summer as he only had a year left to run on his contract and £23 million is a healthy windfall considering the situation.
The transfer will make the 29 year old only the 3rd player in four decades to move directly between the two great rivals, with defenders Mikael Silvestre and Viv Anderson the previous duo to make the brave jump across the battle lines. It is a huge blow for Wenger, who looked to have convinced the Dutchman into staying at the Emirates by splashing the cash on proven talents like Santi Cazorla and Lukas Podolski.
But Van Persie has ultimately chosen to make that final leap in search of trophies and United fans must be licking their lips at the prospect of a Rooney-Van Persie combination lighting up the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.
