Debt-saddled Atletico Madrid are looking to cash in on a few of their big name players and the AS report that Uruguayan defender Diego Godin could be the next in line. The 26 year old centre-back has been at the Vicente Calderon since 2010 and has been a regular in the Capital side over the last two seasons. But Atletico are in need of a cash injection and they have seemingly deemed the defender as expendable.
Manchester City and Chelsea have reportedly been behind the player, who has 56 International caps to his name. They will face stiff competition from AC Milan though as the Italians are also desperate for a central defender. Ateltico hope to bring in at least €11m for Godin who still has three years left in his contract.
A typically combative South American defender, Godin is also blessed with good feet as he is comfortable getting the ball out of defence. City are more in need of defensive reinforcements than Chelsea, who have plenty of options in the central area. Roberto Mancini has been looking to bring in a top quality defender to take the load off Joleon Lescott and Vincent Kompany and the Rosario born player might just be the man he has been looking for.
