Porto's Uruguayan full-back Alvaro Pereira has many admirers across Europe but none have come forward to make an official offer for the 26 year claimed his agent. Chelsea and Napoli were rumoured to be interested in the left-back but his agent Alejandro Savich told The Sun: “He will stay unless there is a proposal. So far there is nothing at all.â€
The Blues had an offer rejected by the Portuguese club last summer, when ex-manager Andre Villas-Boas made tried to raid his former club for the South American. Porto subsequently tied him down to a new contract until 2016, thus increasing his asking fee to a hefty £25.7m. Clubs are unlikely to pay such amounts for a defender, especially one who is already 26 years old.
And, one also is left to question where Pereira would fit in Chelsea's squad as they already have Ashley Cole and Ryan Bertrand to take care of the left-side. It is in fact the right-back position that needs reinforcements following Jose Bosingwa's exit. Cole might be on the wrong side of 30, but he has shown no signs of slowing down as he continues to perform consistently.
Young Bertrand has impressed whenever stepping into the first-team as a replacement and he even made a composed appearance in the Champions League final. A move for Pereira might make sense a year or two down the line when age catches up with Cole and Bertrand needs an experienced defender covering for him.
