Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has exuded confidence over the club's proposed signature of Luka Modric, telling his close friends that the Croatian is very interested in a move to the Bernebeu and that the deal will be closed soon according to reports in today's Guardian.

Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur have been at loggerheads for almost the whole duration of the off-season over Modric's valuation, with the Spurs trying desperately to hold onto their midfield ace amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Manchester United, along with Los Blancos.

Modric, who cost the North London side a club record £16.5 million in 2008, has for long been pushing for an exit from White Hart Lane, with a deal between the Spurs and Chelsea for the 26-year old falling through at the eleventh hour last summer.

Reigning La Liga champions Real Madrid have picked up the gauntlet this time, with Jose Mourinho keen on adding Modric to his glittering squad at the club.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy however has been adamant on receiving his full £40 million valuation for the star, with Perez desperately trying to bring down the total cost of the deal.

Perez however is confident that Modric will be signed before the closing of the transfer window, and is trying to facilitate funds for the Croatian's purchase.

New Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has already publicly stated that he wants Modric at the club, but has lined up a replacement in case of the Croatian's exit, with Portuguese central midfielder Joao Moutinho on his radar.
