Robin van Persie has returned to training with Arsenal for the first time since his outburst when he declared that he would reject a new contract because of differences between his ambitions and the steps being taken to drive the club forward. According to The Guardian, Van Persie underwent a medical assessment at the club after he returned from holiday.

The situation though regarding his future remains tense, and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will surely feel let down by his captain's attitude. The van Persie saga looks set to spiral into a situation similar to last summer, and whether van Persie boards the flight to Kuala Lampur for Arsenal's pre-season tour of Asia may be a sign of what to expect in the future.

In the last summer transfer window, Cesc Fabregas did not go on tour with the Gunners to China and Malaysia, and eventually signed for Barcelona, whereas Samir Nasri, another want-away player, did not take part in the promotional appearances there. There is a sense of urgency amongst the Arsenal management about the Van Persie affair, and the sooner the matter is sorted out, the better, as the delay causes greater damage.

At present, Manchester City, with their seemingly unlimited budget, are favourites to sign the Dutch striker as they are the only club who have the capability to pay the huge fee and salary for the 28 year old. But with the injury and fitness concerns about the player, and the already bloated striker list on their payroll, City may still reconsider. Yet, the onus remains on Arsenal to sell Van Persie, as a disgruntled and unhappy player in the team may destroy the morale of the whole team, unless of course Wenger can work his magic and convince the player to ink a new deal.
