Mali international Tongo Doumbia is edging closer to a move to West Bromich Albion, after snubbing Premier League giants Arsenal. The Rennes midfielder, who is just 22 years of age, will return to England for further talks with West Brom. He had already expressed his desire to play in the Premier League, and was very happy at the prospect of completing his dream move to the top tier of English football.

Talking about why he rejected Arsenal, the player told 20Minutes in France: "I felt more desire there [West Brom Albion]. Obviously, it is less glamorous than Arsenal but I'll be able to continue my progress. I will have more chances to play. This [the Premier League] is a championship that thrills everybody. I hope this is the beginning of a great adventure." About his present club Rennes, he said: "I have no regrets about leaving Rennes, I go quietly and with a smile on my face, I have no grudges against the club."

French sources claim West Brom had already reached an agreement with Rennes after long talks, and that the player was scheduled for a medical on Friday. It was reported that Rennes wanted at least 2.5 million Euros as a transfer fee for their midfield man.

Doumbia had attracted the attention of many clubs, but the Rennes man had set his sights on plying his trade at the Hawthorns, and if things go as planned in the next couple of days, West Brom boss Steve Clarke will indeed be a happy man.

The former Chateauroux player signed for Rennes in 2009, and has scored twice in 47 appearances for the French outfit. He also has two international appearances for the Mali international side.
